I hear questions about the Calcium supplement with or without vitamin D3 and how to use it for your cyclura and other iguanas correctly. So, here is explanation and suggestions from the experienced iguana owners.
What’s the difference between Calcium supplements with or without D?
Calcium with vitamin D is used for reptiles that are NOT exposed to natural sunlight conditions and live inside. Feeding this supplement to your iguanas that are exposed to sunlight may contribute to vitamin D poisoning.
Calcium (without vitamin D) should be given to reptiles that are exposed to natural sunlight.
What dosage should I use?
It is better to use less dosage daily than recommended product manufacturer dosage 2-3 time a week.
Instead use 1/5 to 1/4 recommended amount daily.
How should I apply the supplement?
You can sprinkle calcium supplement on the top of the iguana green salad or fruit. Or you can use artists paint brush to dip into the powder calcium supplement and sprinkle over the top of the food. This insures just a light dusting. Never dump too much of supplement in one spot, your iguana may not want to eat it. Spread the supplement evenly.
There are many brands available in the market, so read the labels and consider the right supplement for your Cyclura.
Also, remember that supplements have specific shelf-life and expiration date. Never feed your iguanas expired vitamins or other supplements.
